Plans to move a Chappaquiddick house threatened by rapid coastal erosion took a step forward Tuesday when the Edgartown planning board approved a special permit for the first stage of the house move.

The board got its first look Tuesday at plans to relocate an 8,800-square-foot house at Wasque Point owned by Richard and Jennifer Schifter, as well as a guest house and garage. The Schifter property has been threatened by rapid erosion over the last year; the coastal bluff is now 50 feet away from a stone pool enclosure.

If you had walked the shoreline of the Vineyard between roughly 1870 and the middle 1930s — especially the muscular, rocky north shore from Lambert’s Cove west to Gay Head — you would have seen something there’s absolutely no sign of today: row after row of wooden stakes stretching up to 100 feet outward from the beach into Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds.

A Southborough executive with four decades of experience in public and private human services work has been named executive director of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, the agency announced late Tuesday. Juliette E. Fay was most recently executive vice president and chief development officer for The Mentor Network, a $1.2 billion national human services company.

The Aquinnah selectmen this week called on the newly-formed Gay Head Light committee for better communication and a stepped-up pace. “It needs more structure and we need to go forward faster than we are,” selectman Jim Newman told committee members who attended the selectmen’s meeting Tuesday.

The seasons of two winter sports teams came to an end last Saturday, as girls’ basketball and boys’ hockey fell in quarterfinals match-ups of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association sectional tournament. The girls, playing at home, lost 49-35 to Norwell, while the boys lost 4-3 to Franklin at a neutral site.
