The headline of this column is a plea that Greta, the great dog, would utter if she could speak. She is becoming a longtime resident of the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard. She does have a human admirer who comes to take her for long walks. When he walks in the door her ardor is hard to miss what with the wiggling and tail-wagging she displays. Unfortunately, this person cannot adopt her at the moment, but he will be happy to write her a reference.
An Oak Bluffs food inspector has resigned amid disagreement with the board of health over the enforcement of health code violations.
Ron Tolin, who had served the town for five years, submitted his resignation on Sept. 3, effective Sept. 10. Calling it a “hard decision,” Mr. Tolin said in a letter that his action was prompted in part by the board’s decision to keep Fat Ronnie’s hamburger restaurant open despite multiple violations of the health code.
This Sunday, Sept. 22, its Kid’s Day at the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. This means children of all shapes and sizes get to fish from the Oak Bluffs Steamship Wharf from 6 to 8 a.m. In days of yore, most everyone fished from this wharf, but that was a long time ago, when the Island was still a lawless backwater.

Cape Air has discontinued off-season flights between Hyannis and the Island due to low demand, the Hyannis-based airline announced Monday.
The change is effective Oct. 22.
“The passenger numbers just aren’t there to sustain a business,” said Michelle Haynes, spokesperson for Cape Air. “For us to continue offering the service that the passengers were just simply not signing up to fly . . . didn’t make good business sense.
Cycle Martha’s Vineyard invites you to rediscover the beauty that abounds on the Vineyard as you take to your bicycle on Sunday, Oct. 6. The 50K or 100K routes take cyclists along the Atlantic Ocean, Nantucket Sound, rolling farmland and state forests. Registration fees are $100 for new riders or $90 for past participants as they ride for a cause — proceeds benefit the charities of the event’s sponsor, the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard.
The fee includes a T-shirt, aid stations and a post-ride barbecue.
