Longtime friends Kenny Lockwood, Paul Thurlow and Nancy Jephcote joined with Washington state-based Daniel Macke on Friday at the Pit Stop to play a medley of their original compositions for a large and appreciative audience. Nancy and Paul met Daniel in Port Townsend last year on a trip to the west coast, played music with him and invited him to the Island.

“This is the first time I’ve been on the Vineyard,” Mr. Macke said. “It’s beautiful and it’s full of talented people, a lot like Port Townsend where I live.”

There can be an aura around musicians, an impenetrable mystique. But for Phil daRosa sitting behind the soundboard at his new recording studio, the Print Shop, humming a tune here and there, spitting a beat every so often, there was none of that.

“I’ve never been down with that approach, both [on the Vineyard] and in the industry,” he said. “This facade that’s untouchable and unaccessible – whatever. We’re all doing the same thing, why even have that whole vibe?”

For current American Idol contestant Erika Van Pelt, last week moving into the top twelve, handling the pressure of performing in front of an audience of millions should be a walk in the park.

After all, her very first gig with the Sultans of Swing, the Martha’s Vineyard based event band most commonly seen at weddings and summer events, was a Nantucket wedding in which she sang two hours of overtime as a storm rolled in over the horizon.

Talk about a high-pressure situation.

By the end of the grand opening night last Friday, it was standing room only at the Pit Stop.

The newest Oak Bluffs music venue that’s housed in a converted Dukes County avenue garage echoed with jazz, folk and rock and roll as Vineyard musicians took the stage to celebrate the first official concert. The past mingled with the present — old concert posters lined the walls from the garage’s previous incarnations — but the pulse was new.
