Never Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen
The Martha’s Vineyard High School culinary arts program is a great training ground for future chefs — hopefully future Island chefs. It’s a hands-on learning experience of all facets of the restaurant business: The students not only prepare and cook the food, they learn how to present and serve it too.
Mangia, Mangia
A slice of Italy, in particular its food, will be touching down on the Island next week on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m.
The folks at the Vineyard Grocer will be holding their second cooking class and dinner focusing on various regions of Italy.
It’s a good news, oh darn kind of announcement. Island guy Nemo Bolin was recently nominated by Food and Wine Magazine for best new chef in New England. That’s fantastic news for Mr. Bolin. He can add this to his budding trophy case of tributes. Last March his restaurant, Cook and Brown, was chosen by Esquire as one of the top 20 new restaurants in the country. In November he was given the Golden Plate award by television’s Billy Costa.
Eat Dinner, Watch Dessert
Before you head to the sweet shop, how about a trip to France.
This Friday, Feb. 18, before the evening performance of Willy Wonka, Les Troubadours are putting together a French meal to be held at the high school cafeteria.
The meal will be served from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and consists of chicken marsala or vegetarian ratatouille with salad, rice pilaf and green beans.
The cost is $12 for adults and $8 for children with proceeds benefiting the Les Troubadours French club spring trip to France.
Eating Well, Doing Good
’Tis better to give than to devour. Even better to give while feasting.
That’s right, the shark is looking to do good while still doing what comes most natural. Eating.
On Tuesday, Feb. 8 Sharky’s in Edgartown will be holding a benefit for the Friends of Tisbury Council on Aging. Best of all, you don’t have to do anything more than enjoy great food to be a part of the benefit.
A percentage of all food sales on that day will go to this good cause.
Valentine’s Weekend
Spend a romantic Valentine’s Day weekend with your loved one at Hob Knob in Edgartown this year and enjoy a romantic culinary experience for two, courtesy of the Island master chef Jaime Hamlin. See a live demonstration, share a toast with the chefs, and enjoy a menu of custom food and wine pairings. The demonstration and toast with the chefs is at 2 p.m., champagne and hors d’oeuvre at 7 p.m. and dinner is served at 7:45, on Saturday, Feb. 12.
