In the weeks following the devastating earthquake in southwestern China, a senior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School is raising money to help the victims.
Laura Kimball of Oak Bluffs, who herself was born in China, has spent the last week collecting money and plans to do it through Memorial Day weekend.
Montessori Fundraiser
Big Night Out, a fundraiser for Vineyard Montessori School, will be held Friday, May 16 at Farm Neck Golf Club from 6 to 10 p.m. The evening will feature gourmet hors d’oeuvres, desserts by Rickard Bread Company and live and silent auctions. At age 10, Patricia Carlet first picked up a paint brush and began to dream of becoming an artist. She took private art classes and studied art in college. But soon, the real world — and all of its bills — caught up with her and that dream was put on hold.
Exhibit of Pastels, Tapestries
Marjorie Berlow of Vineyard Haven is presenting an exhibition of pastels and tapestries through Thursday, May 22 at the Chilmark Public Library.
A Wisconsin native, Ms. Berlow moved to the Vineyard five years ago to join family. She studied art and art history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Milwaukee.
On June 21, Oak Bluffs will kick off summer with two well-known events, HarborFest and Summer Solstice, merged into one day of outdoor entertainment called the Day of Water, Night of Lights.
The day will begin at noon with the 17th annual HarborFest featuring music, arts, crafts and family entertainment nestled between the harborfront and the gingerbread cottages. Throughout the day, the harbor will host activities including the Anything that Floats Race and a demonstration by the U.S. Coast Guard.
After two successful benefit wine dinners for The Yard artists-in-the-schools program at The Sweet Life Café Oak Bluffs, owners Susan and Pierre Guerin are going bubbly, announcing an evening featuring Champagne from the world-renowned house of Veuve Clicquot, on Wednesday, May 14, at 6 p.m.
An aperitif and hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a four-course menu specially prepared to showcase the Champagnes. Winemaker Cyril Brun will be on hand to guide guests through a tasting of five different champagnes.
