Poking out from the gloom of financial news is new hope for the fund-raising efforts of Island nonprofit organizations. A partnership of the Martha’s Vineyard Donors Collaborative, the Oak Bluffs Public Library and the Associated Grant Makers of Massachusetts has established the Grant Resource Center at the library, available for organizations and individuals.
On Friday, Feb. 13 from 7 p.m. to closing, the Grill on Main will host Casino for Camp, a casino night featuring blackjack, roulette, Texas hold-em, and cash prizes. All proceeds will benefit the Safe Haven Project spring camp in April. The project is a nonprofit learning organization that provides educational opportunities for young people living with, or affected by, HIV/AIDS. Along with the familiar weeklong camp held every year at the Island youth hostel, the project has efforts nation and worldwide through speaking tours and educational efforts.
Behind the white clapboard house in prime Edgartown real estate, around the back fence — high steel fencing, covered in turf and topped with razor wire — a patch of grass has been turned over to a garden. Like other gardens in the neighborhood it is dormant and frozen over now, but soon it will be carefully tended by a crew who will pull its weeds, plant and harvest its vegetables, more than willingly and for no pay. Indeed, each man must earn his time there.
Persian Rug Sale
Celebrating the Art of Iran, an exhibition and benefit sale of authentic Persian tribal rugs, is now open in Vineyard Haven.
Sales will benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, Community Services, Affordable Housing and other Island charities,. Visitors have a daily chance to win 50 per cent off any rug.
The exhibition is housed at 18 State Road in Vineyard Haven, the former site of the Belushi-Pisano Gallery. Opening hours are Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association will hold their annual banquet tomorrow at noon at the Edgartown Whaling Church. More than 100 recreational fishermen are expected to attend the luncheon in the Baylies Room. The event is open to club members and prospective members during this celebration of the club’s 20th year.
Sharky’s Helps Sally
Sharky’s Edgartown cantina is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. to assist Islander Sally Sylvia with her medical expenses. Located at 266 upper Main street, the restaurant is offering food, a cash bar, entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets cost $20 and are available at the door. For details, call 508-627-6565.
