Guests swarmed to Mediterranean restaurant early Saturday afternoon to honor Empowered Woman of the Year Cindy Doyle and to observe the passing of the torch from former Women Empowered executive director Kaye Flathers to successor Sheila Bracy.
“We were thrilled with the turnout,” said Ms. Bracy. She attributes the success of the brunch to the volunteers who dedicated their time to organizing the event.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life sets up at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School next week for its sixth annual event. Teams of walkers and runners will gather at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 5 and most will camp overnight so they can continue taking turns on the track until the event ends at noon on Saturday.
Calling All Poets
The Island Voices poetry performance series continues at Che’s Lounge on Wednesday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. All Island poets are invited. The event is slated to continue weekly through the summer, with a roster including spoken word performers, rappers and freestylers, slam poets, singer-songwriters, and free verse and traditional form poets.
Neither rain nor wind along State Beach could dissuade more than 70 stalwart walkers from participating on Sunday in the annual fundraiser sponsored by Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod and the Islands. Urged on by a half-dozen kayakers paddling alongside the walkers, there was a sense of camaraderie in this event which is not just about money but also about expanding awareness of the ravages of Alzheimer’s.
Juggling kids over the long weekend? Take them to The Yard, where actress, dance theatre artist and certified Kripalu yoga teacher Anita McFarlane will lead Circus Yoga, a blend of yoga, creative movement, theatre games and circus skills — designed (and tested) to engage all ages.
Concert for Tom Osmers
A benefit concert will be held on Sunday, May 17 for Tom Osmers, the West Tisbury shellfish constable and well-known Island figure who recently became ill. The event will be at the Agricultural Hall from 5 to 10 p.m. A potluck dinner will be followed by live music, including Willie Mason, Jemima James, Nina Violet, Ballyhoo, Squash Meadow and JohnnyHoy. All are welcome; pleas e bring a dish to share.
