Tower Grants

The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation recently awarded $12,265 to Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools. One of the goals of the foundation is to enhance service delivery for children, adolescents, and young adults up to age 26 with developmental disabilities.

This initiative was designed to provide funds for the purchase of specialized equipment and/or assistive technology for use by kids in school programs.

The Dukes County Deputy Sheriff’s all-star team had the lead for a short time, in the annual celebrity softball classic on Saturday afternoon in Veteran’s Memorial Park. But it was fleeting, and in the end they lost 20 to 23 before a scattering of fans.

Bob Ogden pitched for the sheriff’s team.

The Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock strode acress the altar of the 333-year-old First Congregational Church of West Tisbury and surveyed the weathered, expectant faces of its Yankee parishioners. Mr. Warnock hails from Atlanta, Ga., where he leads the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr.

“Let the church say Amen!” he announced. The congregation, though unpracticed, made a solid reply; still it was no doubt fainter than the amens Rev. Warnock usually elicits.

At six o’clock on Tuesday, State Beach seems as it does any other day of the week at this time. Calm waves lap the shore as seagulls fly above and toddlers race through the sand.

The second annual Martha’s Vineyard Dog Parade is August 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Oak Bluffs’ Ocean Park, and its slogan is Welcome Back Bo, for First Dog Bo Obama.

Everyone is invited, dog or no dog, for a walk in the park.

The opportunity to have your dog marshal the parade was sold to the high bidders at the Possible Dreams Auction, Karen Weitz and Jim Kopf. When they learned they might not be on Island for the parade, the couple passed their dream to a child in the Early Childhood Program at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
