The American Red Cross will offer free volunteer classes at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School beginning Oct. 6 and running through Nov. 7.

After the training, volunteers become Red Cross certified, and with some experience can be deployed locally and nationally. The class is open to anyone 17 years and older who would like to become a Red Cross disaster action team member. There are no other prerequisites and all classes are free.

CPR and First Aid Class

The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands chapter, will be holding an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Oct. 10 at the YMCA at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It costs $50 for CPR/AED or $60 for CPR/AED and First Aid.

On Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Peter Cabana will give a lecture, Wind Economics 101, at the Vineyard Haven library. The lecture will begin with the basics of wind generated electricity and then follow up with what has happened in Europe, the opportunities available to the United States and how Massachusetts is positioned to lead the nation. Janice Shields returns to the Polly Hill Arboretum on Saturday, Oct. 3 for her popular bench workshop. Each workshop participant will construct a garden bench using native eastern hardwoods. The pre-cut materials and connecting hardware will be provided by the instructor. This is a five hour workshop, designed for all skill levels. A tool list will be available. Ms. Shields has been designing and building rustic furniture since 1995, and teaches workshops all over the Northeast. Class runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., bring a bag lunch.
