Tonight, August 2, at 8 p.m. the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is presenting a film whose subject matter knows no shortage of dedicated believers, angry dissenters, and, perhaps largest of all the constituents, the confused masses in the middle.

The film is called Cape Spin and it aims to chronicle both sides of the debate over the proposal to build wind turbines in Nantucket Sound, also known as Cape Wind.

The Vineyard Playhouse raised $350,000 at its annual fundraiser on Sunday night, a huge boost for the capital campaign now under way to renovate the historic playhouse building on Church street in Vineyard Haven. The renovation project includes remodeling the stage, which will be named after the late actress Patricia Neal, it was announced at the event early Sunday evening.

In the 1966 documentary, The Endless Summer, director Bruce Brown chronicled the journey of two friends from California chasing waves across the globe. It was a seminal movie that helped fuel the rise of the burgeoning sport. Yes, surfing once was referred to as burgeoning; just a minor blip on the marketers’ radar and considered an activity for outsiders on a par with getting a tattoo. How times have changed.

As a photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured many of the most famous images of the 20th century, from wars to movie stars. He was, in a sense, the world’s photographer. But he was also the Vineyard’s own, taking numerous photos during his many summer spent on the Island.

Book lovers flocked to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School this past weekend for the 54th annual West Tisbury Book Sale. Vineyarders and vacationers of all ages perused the well-organized stacks for literary treasures. Sections included travel, gardening, architecture, mystery, children’s books (perhaps the most extensive of all), art, nonfiction, fiction, there was even a Vineyard authors table.
