Stable Friendships Build Pond View Horse Farm

Long before dawn, you can hear the soft munching of hay and quiet nickering of horses at Pond View Farm as Sarah Doyle prepares for another 6 a.m. trip off-Island to a horse show.

Sarah moved to the Island in 1986 and began teaching riding lessons at Arrowhead Farm in West Tisbury. She began living on the Vineyard year-round after she took a job with the late Anne and Tony Fisher. She currently lives in Chilmark with her husband, Bret Stearns, and three kids, Jeff, 19, Ava, 6, and Graham, 4.

Book lovers flocked to Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School this past weekend for the 54th annual West Tisbury Book Sale. Vineyarders and vacationers of all ages perused the well-organized stacks for literary treasures. Sections included travel, gardening, architecture, mystery, children’s books (perhaps the most extensive of all), art, nonfiction, fiction, there was even a Vineyard authors table.

When David Gans was sent to Jamaica in 1982 by his employer, Record Magazine, he never suspected he would be setting in motion the rest of his career. While in Jamaica, Mr. Gans met photographer Peter Simon, with whom he would later coauthor his first book, Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of The Grateful Dead.

It’s nowhere near Halloween, and yet 16 masks took shape in the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown on Friday. Children’s art classes have been an integral part of this gallery since its inception in 1954. The Old Sculpin is a nonprofit organization maintained by Martha’s Vineyard Art Association Inc. The building, which originally housed the boat building shed for the late Manuel Swartz Roberts, was bought by the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust two years ago.

The gallery holds an array of art classes for children, teens and adults.

Mike and Kerry Saunier are not new to Heather Gardens. This will be Mike’s sixth season as the operating manager of the property, so when he and his wife Kerry purchased the West Tisbury property on June 19, they knew they were on familiar turf.
