Appraisal Day returns to the Martha’s Vineyard Museum on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Three experts from Skinner, Inc., one of the world’s leading auction houses, will be on hand to evaluate everything from furniture to jewelry to calligraphy and everything in between. So check your closets, attics, the backyard, too.
This year the museum is encouraging the public to bring any Chinese, Korean, Indian and Japanese artwork and antiques in as Asian art specialist Judith Dowling will be on hand to evaluate such items.
This month the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library are presenting an exhibit of photographs by Joe Doebler as part of its Art in the Stacks program. The exhibit begins on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the library.
Mr. Doebler was an underwater acoustic engineer for the Navy and he and his wife retired to the Vineyard in 1996. But he has been taking pictures since he was a small boy.
Today Mr. Cooney is still drawing in class, but as an instructor he’s no longer getting disapproving looks.
The Martha’s Vineyard Fibershed is holding a demonstration and sale at Native Earth Teaching Farm on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Fibershed project encourages one to think about local clothing similar to local food.
There will be locally-made gifts for sale, and also demonstrations and mini-lessons in spinning, knitting, weaving and other fiber arts. There will also be children’s games and activities, workshop raffles, free admission and free popcorn.
The Native Earth Teaching Farm is located on State Road in Chilmark.
On Saturday, Nov. 24, Kara Taylor is holding an opening for her latest exhibit entitled Poetry in Paint, Reflections on Freedom and Confinement. This will be the last reception Ms. Taylor holds at her gallery located at 19 Main street in Vineyard Haven. After seven years at this space she is moving on. She is going out on a powerful note.
The show is a personal one for Ms. Taylor. Of course, all of an artist’s work is personal, but the subject matter for this show cuts especially close to the core.
