The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society is celebrating its 45th anniversary this summer with a lineup of performances by nationally known groups such as the Harlem String Quartet and Infinite Brass.

This summer marks the second year for the Martha’s Vineyard Sound International Indie Music Festival held at Waban Park in Oak Bluffs. It also signifies an expansion in the event’s mission. This year’s festival will feature local food and artisans, dance performances and activities for kids.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s new film, Southpaw, was screened this week by the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival as part of their summer film series, and featured a discussion with Mr. Gyllenhaal following the viewing. Mr. Gyllenhaal said he comes to the Vineyard to decompress after a tough role.

On Thursday evening, as part of the Summer Institute Speaker Series at the Hebrew Center, Jane Harman, former congresswoman and president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, will discuss terrorism and foreign policy relating to the Middle East.

Walk The Moon was the big name at the fifth annual Stars and Stripes festival held on Friday night at Flatbread, but two local kids proved they were ready for the limelight too. Leah Hairston and Robert Hanjian opened the sold-out show to benefit the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard.

On no other summer afternoon would there be so many empty parking spaces in downtown Edgartown, But the Fourth of July parade was about to begin and crowds gathered on porches and lined sidewalks to celebrate.
