Remembering 9/11

A Time and Space To Be Together and Reflect on 9/11 with Silence, Words and Music will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard.

This will be a time of reflection and of sharing of our remembrances, concerns and sorrows with Rev. Polly Leland-Mayer and with each other. Readings to share will be welcomed.

The Unitarian Universalist chapel is located at 238 Main street in Vineyard Haven. It is a welcoming congregation and is universally accessible.

Rotary Club Winners

The Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard announced the winners of the recent Great Lobster Raffle fund-raiser which the club holds each year. Winners were selected at the club luncheon meeting on August 27 at the Ocean View Restaurant in Oak Bluffs.

• First prize: 50 pounds of lobsters went to April Anastacio of Edgartown.

• Second prize: 25 pounds of lobsters went to Ray LaPorte of Vineyard Haven.

• Third prize: 15 pounds of lobsters went to Walter Morrison of Edgartown.

Author Tom Dresser will discuss his book Mystery on Martha’s Vineyard: Politics, Passion and Scandal on East Chop, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Follow the drumbeats to the Circle at the Aquinnah Cliffs on Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 6 p.m. for the annual powwow with the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).

There will be traditional dancing and drumming, Native American exhibits, arts, crafts and food, all sponsored by the Tribal Youth Program.

Gates open at 10 a.m. Grand entry is at noon. Follow the signs; parking is free, with a free shuttle to and from the Cliffs.

Barack Party

Barack’n’Roll, a benefit with entertainment and a buffet for all ages begins Sunday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. at 45 Pequot avenue in Oak Bluffs. Performances from Sabrina Luening, Erich Luening, Mike Martin y Rootsticks and hip-hop dancers from Built on Stilts, begin at 5 p.m. Suggested donation of $20 can be directed to the Obama for President campaign or to the Democratic National Committee’s congressional fund-raising efforts.
