Most Fridays, Kate Warner can be found in her West Tisbury kitchen. Even in early December, the room is hot; sun streams in through tall windows and inside two knee-level ovens, bread is baking. On a recent Friday Ms. Warner wore a rainbow-striped apron when she baked three organic breads from scratch: ciabatta, multigrain and sweet potato.

The town of Edgartown has named Andrew Kelly to the position of assistant fire chief. Mr. Kelly will replace former assistant chief Scott Ellis, who announced his retirement this fall after 35 years of service to the volunteer fire department.

Dragging for bay scallops is now prohibited in Edgartown when the air temperature falls below 30 degrees fahrenheit. The change from 28 to 30 degrees is intended to protect bay scallop seed, especially the small seed growing at Cape Pogue.

Discouraged by a stalled quest for federal funding, the town of Oak Bluffs is now looking for other ways to dredge the sand-filled channel beneath the Little Bridge at Sengekontacket Pond. The inlet has now closed and the window to dredge it is also closing, with April the deadline for work to be done.

The work of an EMT begins with basic training, and recruits are always needed. Classes begin in early January. An informational open house will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Edgartown fire station. All are welcome.
