STAY DRY

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

We are writing to express our strong conviction regarding the so-called beer and wine issue in Vineyard Haven. Our conviction grows out of a good many years of experience and observation in a considerable number of communities where we have been associated.

CLOCK REPAIR

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

In light of the devastating fire on Main street Vineyard Haven, I think it would be a great civic gesture if NStar would find a live circuit that could be used for a temporary feed to the Bunch of Grapes clock. This would provide an instant symbol of renewal, both for the town and for the owners that have lost so much.

ROOTING FOR HILLARY

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

I’ve scoured my e-mail list and shamelessly scavenged from all of my friend’s e-mail recipient lists, believing that the power of people and the Internet will work its magic to help my friend and fellow Vineyarder Hillary Landers, who suffered a spinal cord injury in the fall of 2006.

FOUNDATION GONE ASTRAY

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

As a great nephew of Caroline Tuthill and a longtime supporter of Sheriff’s Meadow, I am completely aghast that this once well-respected, august conservation organization could have lost its way by straying from its core mission of preservation and conservation. It saddens me greatly that the efforts of so many on the Island to preserve and protect has been undone by greed, negligence and naivete.

STARTING SMALL

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

When passing by the row of pitch pines along State Road at the Polly Hill Arboretum, I often notice their picturesque beauty that represents the Vineyard sense of place. I enjoy knowing these trees were planted as seedlings purchased in 1929 for 10 cents each. Though I don’t know the exact circumstance of their planting, I imagine Howard Butcher Jr., perhaps with the help of his daughter, the future Polly Hill, planting the little trees with an old shovel and a watering can.
