The girls and boys soccer teams defeated their respective opponents Monday to advance to the next round of playoffs.

The Martha’s Vineyard Bank Charitable Foundation granted nearly $500,000 to organizations on the Island and in Falmouth Tuesday evening at Camp Jabberwocky.

The girls team plays Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School at 3 p.m. on Monday, and the boys team will follow at 5 p.m. against Cardinal Spellman.

In August, Susie Middleton, editor of Cook the Vineyard, was diagnosed with alpha-gal, the tick-borne illness that can make people allergic to red meat, dairy and other mammal products. She has now published an alpha-gal resource guide.

Riding the big wins on Nantucket, the girls and boys Vineyard high school soccer teams are ready for postseason play, beginning Monday at home. The girls team plays at 3 p.m. and the boys teams follows at 5 p.m.

The Island celebrates Halloween this week with trick or treating all over the Island, a haunted house in Vineyard Haven and a spooky hayride through the West Tisbury cemetery.
