Two longstanding Chilmark residents who own and rent out multiple moorings in town will be allowed to continue — for the time being, at least.
But Chilmark selectmen this week agreed to seek guidance from the state on the matter.
Earlier this winter, a sharply divided board of selectmen requested an opinion from their attorney as to whether the practice was legal.
Heavy winds can delay some outdoor ventures. But when the Chilmark planning board meets on Monday, they will hope for wind. On the agenda is a site visit to at least one of the two residential wind turbines which have gone up in town in the past two months.
One is a specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology. The other is an internist by training who spent much of his career in emergency medicine. Both traded jobs at top hospitals in Boston for rural life on an Island off the coast of Cape Cod. They met many years later, at a walk-in clinic started in the 1980s by Dr. Michael Jacobs. They share a love of medicine and a commitment to practicing family medicine, much as country doctors did years ago, though now they give out their cell phone numbers instead of the number to a home telephone.
Concluding an exhaustive 18-month study, the Dukes County Charter Study Commission issued recommendations for the future of county government in its final report released Thursday.
The report leaves intact much of county government as it is known today.
“The charter commission has opted for minimal change in the charter because in the course of its work it became apparent that governance structure was not the underlying cause of the problems that gave rise to the creation of the commission,” the report states.
As the story goes, the history of farming at Katama began in the first World War when Edgartown families planted army and navy beans deep in the rich soil there. Yet maps of the Island which date from 1862 show fences bordering the land, indicating that agricultural use of the land can be traced to an even earlier date.
They recycle paper, plastic and metal and use local potatoes, carrots and lettuce in their cafeteria. Plans are in the works for a school garden and compost pile. And now, the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School hopes to become the first net zero, carbon neutral school in the nation.
