Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

In an unexpected twist, Joseph G. Moujabber, the Oak Bluffs resident who built a three-story garage along the North Bluff without a permit, has appealed the recent decision by a Dukes County superior court judge to annul a demolition order and send the garage back to a town architectural board for fresh review.

A secretary at the Oak Bluffs School has been charged with embezzling more than $15,000 from a school account by forging the principal’s name on several checks and then keeping the money.

Susan T. Peters, 59, of Oak Bluffs, was summonsed last week on charges of larceny by a single scheme over $250, forgery of checks, uttering false checks and larceny over $250.

At an age when most people her age are enjoying the beach or hanging out with their friends, 23-year-old Robyn Hanover of West Tisbury can usually be found in a horse barn. And while she spends much of that time doing what she loves — riding her horse and training for equestrian competitions with a hopeful eye toward Olympic competition — there is plenty of time spent doing less glamorous chores.

Things like brushing and cleaning the horses. Moving and dispersing bales of hay. Shoveling manure.

There’s an old saying, if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

The old cliche could be applied to the case of Renato Gomes Da Rocha, a 48-year-old Brazilian national who disappeared from the Island without a trace almost 18 months ago. On an Island where instances of missing persons are rare, the case of Mr. Da Rocha has largely remained under the radar of public attention, despite evidence that Mr. Da Rocha may have been the victim of foul play.

Island bars and restaurants were jumping this past Labor Day weekend, but police from Aquinnah to Oak Bluffs reported most people were on their best behavior and there were few notable incidents of depravity or disturbance.

Police officials said the number of calls for service was up, although most were for more mundane indiscretions such as traffic stops.

“There was a high number of people on the Island; but everyone seemed to be on their best behavior. It was pretty tame,” Oak Bluffs Sgt. Michael Marchand said.

As August heat gives way to the cooler temperatures of fall, so too changes the sporting landscape of the Vineyard.

In recent weeks, beach volleyball and recreational league softball have been replaced by high school football, cross country and field hockey. Eight teams compete in six sports during the fall high school sports season, more than any other season.

From back swings to forechecks to half-back options, the signs of autumn are everywhere.
