Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

A Vineyard Haven man accused of sexually assaulting a woman after a wedding party three years ago was convicted of rape by a jury last week and sentenced to up to seven years in prison by a Dukes County Superior Court judge.

The Hon. C. Brian McDonald last Friday sentenced Richard Skrzypczyk, 59, to a prison term of no less than five and no more than seven years at MCI Cedar Junction, a maximum security facility located in Walpole. The jury took less than three hours to find him guilty.

Oak Bluffs voters may soon be asked to spend $100,000 to pay for engineering work associated with an ambitious waterfront improvement project along Seaview avenue from Oak Bluffs harbor to Farm Pond.

The total cost of the project is pegged at $2.7 million.

The news come on the heels of the release of a 35-page report entitled Sea View Revitalization Concept Master Plan, drafted by a special task force created last year to develop a plan to revitalize the town beach.

Asked to describe his team's effort in last Friday's crushing 20-16 loss to the Crusaders from Cape Cod Tech/Harwich, no-nonsense Vineyarders football coach Donald Herman doesn't have to think long for an answer.

"Soft," he said roundly of his team's effort in the loss that effectively eliminated the team from going to the postseason. "We were soft and we were flat. I am not happy with what is going on right now."

The body of a Fairhaven man who likely jumped overboard from the New Bedford high-speed ferry to the Vineyard last month was found along a isolated stretch of beach on West Chop Saturday, police said.

The body of Walter Tyler, 28, was found around 7:45 a.m. near the West Chop pier along a north facing beach. Police said the body was partially decomposed, and was found wearing the same clothing Mr. Tyler was wearing when he boarded the fast ferry last month.

A body that washed ashore in Edgartown harbor earlier this year is expected to be identified as a Brazilian carpenter who went missing over 18 months ago, state police said this week.

State police Sgt. Jeff Stone said investigators believe the body found on a small stretch of beach at the end of Morse street on April 16 was Renato Gomes Da Rocha, a 48-year-old Brazilian national who disappeared from the Island without trace in April of 2006.

A key subcommittee of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission voted unanimously on Monday to recommend that the controversial three-story garage built by Joseph G. Moujabber in Oak Bluffs without a proper permit three years ago should be reviewed by the full commission as a development of regional impact (DRI).

The vote by the commission’s land use planning committee sets the stage for a comprehensive public review of the project which has been dubbed Garage Mahal by critics.
