Creative Cast Helps Bring Shakespeare to the Masses

Shakespeare for the Masses is typically an off-season, indoor production. This summer, however, the troupe of intrepid actors and Shakespeare experts have taken their show outside and on the road.

In collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, the show is performed at the Tisbury Amphitheatre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It also pops up at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Featherstone Center for the Arts and the Vineyard Drive-In.

But despite the venue shifts, the core message from 13 seasons remains the same: “Quick & Painless & Free!”

Nicole Galland digs Shakespeare. Really, really digs Shakespeare. And she wants you to dig it, too. No time like the present, either.

Tomorrow night, June 30, beginning at 8 p.m. she is hosting an event called Bard at the Yard at the dance colony in Chilmark.

The story is admittedly odd, but the musical I Sent a Letter to My Love (lyrics and music by Melissa Manchester and Jeffrey Sweet) now running at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, has been stylishly packaged by Island Theatre Workshop. The storyline was adapted from a novel of the same name by Bernice Rubens, so perhaps the oddness may be laid at the feet of the author.

Cardboard pieces, broken sticks, a busted wicker chair, a stepladder, an empty pack of cigarettes and a mop bucket lay in a pile on the floor of the Hebrew Center last Monday night.

MJ Bruder Munafo, the executive artistic director of the Vineyard Playhouse, took the stage.

“We want to thank the Hebrew Center for this wonderful space,” she said, looking down at the debris. “Which we’ve immediately trashed.”

Another Letter to My Love

First it was a book, then a movie and now a play being staged by the folks at Island Theatre Workshop. The story in question is I Sent a Letter to My Love, written in 1975 by Bernice Rubens, a Welsh writer who won the Booker Prize in 1970 and was again short-listed for the prize in 1978.

The Vineyard Playhouse may be under construction this summer, but that isn’t stopping them from putting on plenty of shows. First up are their Monday Night Specials, beginning June 25 and continuing throughout the summer. This year the shows are being held at the Hebrew Center, 130 Center street, Vineyard Haven.

Museum Opens Theatre Exhibit

Martha’s Vineyard is, of course, known for its beaches and endless summer breezes. But it is also known for its theatre; after all, the Island has been a haven for artists for, well, what do you think those whalers did for fun?
