Creative Cast Helps Bring Shakespeare to the Masses

Shakespeare for the Masses is typically an off-season, indoor production. This summer, however, the troupe of intrepid actors and Shakespeare experts have taken their show outside and on the road.

In collaboration with the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, the show is performed at the Tisbury Amphitheatre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It also pops up at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Featherstone Center for the Arts and the Vineyard Drive-In.

But despite the venue shifts, the core message from 13 seasons remains the same: “Quick & Painless & Free!”

IMP has returned from two sold out shows at the Chicago Improv Festival and is showcasing their show this weekend back on the Vineyard. The troupe was the only teen group selected to perform at the festival in the city noted as the improv capital of the country. Johnathan Pitts, executive director of the Chicago festival, called the Island group “one of the best troupes in the country.”

Last year the Vineyard Playhouse began an ambitious capital campaign to refurbish the theatre in Vineyard Haven. Because of construction the house was dark last summer, although the show did go on at several other locations throughout the Island. This summer the downstairs area of the Playhouse will open. Funds are still being raised, though, to complete the main stage upstairs, renamed the Patricia Neal Stage. For those on the West Coast there will be a fundraiser on May 4 in Los Angeles at the home of Ms. Neal’s daughter, Lucy Dahl. The party is from 6 to 8 p.m. at 357 S.

This weekend a group of villains, heroes, lovers and a crooked lawyer are taking over the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. No, this is not the opening day of the farmers’ market.

That most of these characters will resemble school kids might be a tip off. But don’t let the fake mustaches fool you.

During last Thursday’s IMP rehearsal, there was some hesitation about Hansel. The game was called “Happily Ever After . . . Or Not,” and the improv group of teenage actors were waiting for the narrator, in this case Ashley Girard, to begin the story.

IMP is headed to Chicago. The Island improv troupe has just been named an official selection of the 2013 Chicago Improv Festival. The festival is one the biggest in the country and IMP is the only teen troupe to receive this honor. They perform April 1 to 7, so get your Windy City tickets now.

Prepare to be Betrayed, this time in Edgartown. The one-woman show starring Louise DuArt which premiered to a standing-room-only crowd earlier this winter at Dreamland in Oak Bluffs, will have two more shows this weekend at the Harbor View Hotel, 131 North Water street, Edgartown.
