Soldier’s Memories

Islander Mev Good will present his recollection of his teenage experience in World War II — when he enlisted in the 10th Mountain Division which fought in Italy — at a talk on Monday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Tisbury Senior Center, 34 Pine Tree Road in Vineyard Haven. All are invited to the presentation, which includes an original recording of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s address before the House of Commons in 1940.

Hearing Talk

Audiologist Lesley Segal Pallas will be the guest speaker this month at the Parish Visitation’s meeting of the United Methodist Cooperative Ministry at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7.

The topic for discussion will be Hearing and the Elderly. The talk will focus on communicating effectively with hearing-impaired people. At Vineyard Audiology, Ms. Pallas provides hearing health care for children and seniors as well as counseling about living with hearing loss.

Habitat Will Raise Roof

Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard is seeking volunteers with roofing experience to help with its fifth house this Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Vineyard Committee on Hunger, along with Reliable Market and several Vineyard houses of worship, are working together again this year to ensure that Island families who are in need will have a great Thanksgiving meal (and Christmas). The volunteer organizers are asking Islanders who can to sponsor one of these families by contributing the cost of one family’s meal, $25.

Red Stocking is a long-standing effort to provide food and clothing to Island children from birth through grade eight. Approximately 280 children were served last year by Red Stocking.

Kitty Dukakis, the former first lady of Massachusetts and wife of 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, will be on the Vineyard Tuesday to speak about her struggle with mental illness, the stress added by the public life, and how electroconvulsive therapy saved her life.

Her talk, Shock of Recognition: Depression, Addiction and Hope, is set for Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center on Centre street in Vineyard Haven, as part of the fall season of the Vineyard Haven library’s evening lecture series.
