Art
Late October swirls with the supernatural. Dropping temperatures, cheap candy and carved pumpkins all herald the coming of Halloween. Tomorrow, ethereal energies are converging at the Mystic Fair, a healing arts bazaar being held at the Vineyard Playhouse.
Harvest Festival
Tomorrow is Vineyard Gardens’ annual Harvest Festival, with free crafts, refreshments and information available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the nursery on State Road in West Tisbury. All are welcome for the Saturday demonstrations and instruction on decorating with edible flowers, creating autumn flower bouquets, building pinecone bird feeders and planting paperwhite bulbs. For details, call 508-693-8511.
The Island Grown Initiative will hold the second annual local foods dinner on Monday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Culinary Arts dining room.
Danielle Dominick of the Scottish Bakehouse will be guest chef, working alongside Jack O’Malley, the high school’s culinary arts program director and his students in preparing a four-course meal made with Island-grown ingredients.
Not since the Sixties have Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur made music together on the Vineyard — but they will be back on Saturday at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven.
Patrons of the old Mooncusser Coffee House in Oak Bluffs may recall the pair jamming as part of the Kweskin Jug Band there on several occasions. Carly and Lucy Simon opened for them there.
The organizers of the surplus food program, now called Helping Hands, begin distributions today, continuing monthly through April, 2009.
Future dates, all Fridays, are: Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 16, Feb, 13, March 13, and April 10.
All distributions will take place at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Parish House in Vineyard Haven. The parish house is the small building on William street right next to the church. Food will be distributed until we run out.
On Tuesday, Oct. 21, the Vinyard Haven Library Evening Lecture Series will present Bundle Up for the Cold: How to Winterize Your House at 7 p.m. Energy consultant Chris Fried will discuss energy-saving improvements for your home or business. Many improvements cost little and are easy to implement, yet save a lot.
