Swing for the kids this Sunday, Sept. 19, at the 22nd annual Howard W. Leonard golf tournament hosted by Mink Meadows Golf Club. Registration is $100 per player with proceeds benefitting the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program of Martha’s Vineyard.

Play begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Interested players can create their own foursome or the club will play matchmaker.

Breakfast is from the Black Dog and lunch from Tea Lane Caterers.

Painter Mark Bullen is offering a three-day intensive master class in portrait painting at Featherstone Center for the Arts, Oct. 1 to 3.

Through daily demonstrations from the live model, Mr. Bullen will show you how to achieve drawing, form and color in your own work. There will be an emphasis on mixing flesh tints, drawing with a brush and understanding light and shade. The class is designed for both beginning and advanced painters’ benefit. The class runs Friday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuition is $375.

Wind Farm Talk

This morning, Sept. 17, Paul Pimentel of the Vineyard Power Committee, a grassroots group devoted to creating a windfarm at a site beyond Noman’s Land, will discuss the feasibility, benefits and economics of a wind farm at that location. He will also examine the feasibility of an electricity co-op.

Mr. Pimental is a professional engineer with 40 years experience in energy systems including the development of windmills, solar power and cogeneration.

Viking Scholar to Give Lecture

Like any selfrespecting Viking, Leif Eriksson roamed far and wide. A difficult guy to pin down, the subject of his actual homestead has been in much debate among Viking specialists. Relatively recently, 1960 to be exact, L’Anse aux Meadows, translation Jellyfish Cove, a cozy nook at the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, has been touted as the place Mr. Eriksson hung his helmet.

Art with Lani Carney

Lani Carney is beginning her fall season art workshops at Featherstone Gallery in Oak Bluffs. Miss Lani’s ever popular, imaginative classes offer something for every budding child artist.

The slate of classes includes portrait painting, animals in art, oil painting and world of color. Each class is geared for different age groups ranging from three to eleven years old.
