A series of events are scheduled this weekend and next week as culminating activities of the year for the visual and performing arts departments at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
Between the Lines, an original play written for the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild Competition, will be performed at the Grange Hall at 7:30 pm. today, Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 in West Tisbury.
The hit television series Lost tracks the lives of plane crash survivors on a mysterious island, winks Heather Capece in a sly marketing maneuver. The family play she is directing, Pirate Island, premiering this weekend at the Vineyard Playhouse, toys with the same theme, only with shipwreck survivors washed up on a deserted island.
The IMPers will present a night of improvised theatre next Friday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven.
This two-act show will include two types of improv: first, short-form improvised games and skits — a fast-paced act with lots of audience participation as well as laughs. Second, the troupe will take the stage to perform their Chicago-style, theatrical-based long-form improvisation. Based off a single suggestion, the troupe improvises a one-act play, usually lasting about 30 to 35 minutes.
Island celebrations of National Poetry Month continue with Vineyard Slam’s first open reading of the 2008 season at Che’s Lounge on Main street in Vineyard Haven, tomorrow, Saturday, April 12.
Starting at 7 p.m., student and adult poets are invited to read from their original works in both open microphone and slam formats.
The slam is open to everyone, students and adults, spectators and participants. Those who wish to read can sign up at the door.
The suggested donation is $1.
Christmas lights illuminate the yellow upstairs room filled with squashy armchairs, each of which contains at least one sprawling teenager. Up front, two boys fool around with a microphone, testing their amplified voices, revelling in the leisurely atmosphere — that is, until the real show begins.

This play tells the true story of Sleeping Beauty and the fairy who was not invited to the princess’ christening. The fairy, named Mathilda (pronounced with the “h”), was not evil but more of a magical klutz who had a habit of giving bad gifts. Once the beauty is asleep, the rest of the fairies work to find the princess’ one true love to wake her and the rest of the kingdom.
