Frost Biters Begin Races
Off of Vineyard Haven
The Frost Biters and Winter Guys sailing group, which sails in the waters off Vineyard Haven, have held their first two races of the season.
George Delaney in Ardent won the first spring race of the Frost Biters and Winter Guys sailing group, held May 25 at Vineyard Haven.
The sailors raced once around the Nun 6 buoy in the harbor, the Nun 4 buoy off West Chop, and the Can 23A buoy off East Chop. The winds were east-northeast at six to 12 knots.
In one of the more exciting high school games in recent memory, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team scored two goals in the final two minutes to win yesterday’s quarterfinal game of the MIAA Division II South tournament by a final score of 13-12.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Vineyarders (14-4-1) advance to a semifinals game against eighth-seeded Duxbury (14-4-1). The game will be held on the Island Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the regional high school main athletic field.
A funny thing happened on the way to the state tournament this past week for the regional high school boys’ tennis team.
In the most bizarre of circumstances, the boys were forced to play the girls’ team from East Bridgewater in the preliminary round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament because of a little-known provision in the rules regarding mixed-gender teams.
The game of lacrosse was the clear focus of the sporting world on the Vineyard this past week as both the boys’ and girls’ high school varsity teams hosted games in the opening round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.
They recycle paper, plastic and metal and use local potatoes, carrots and lettuce in their cafeteria. Plans are in the works for a school garden and compost pile. And now, the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School hopes to become the first net zero, carbon neutral school in the nation.
Although the regular spring sports season for high school athletics is inching to a close, several teams will be starting a second season this week when they play in the opening round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.
