Mary Ollen represented Martha’s Vineyard High School in the 66th Annual Student Government Day at the State House in Boston on April 5. The event provides students from across the Commonwealth opportunities to take on the roles of governor, constitutional officers, legislators and court justices to experience what it is like to “run” the state government for a day.

Ms. Ollen was assigned to serve as a member of the Senate.

Elaine Weintraub says “history” a lot. The word rolls off her tongue briskly in three sharp syllables: hih-store-ee.

“Welcome to the 16th annual tour of the African American Heritage Trail,” she said last Thursday at the start of this year’s sophomore class field trip. “Here’s your chance of learning some real hih-store-ee.”

The Edgartown School has announced its honor roll for the third quarter of the 2012-2013 academic year.

On Monday kindergarten and first grade students at the Chilmark School took their youthful expertise to the air. As part of a STEM project, standing for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the children collaborated on kite making. They were given 25 pennies to spend on materials for each kite and the designs were all their own.

The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program celebrated the completion of its 14th year of teaching English to adult immigrants with a ceremony at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s Performing Arts Center in early April..

The student body hailed from 14 different countries: Thailand, Korea, Russia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Columbia, Honduras, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Spain, and Romania. The joy-filled evening included song, poetry, speeches and delicious food, all student-produced.
