The owners of Reliable Market are proposing to demolish the former Phillips Hardware store on Circuit avenue in order to build a new Victorian-style mixed use building that would have retail space and housing.
On Saturday, Phillips Hardware in Oak Bluffs closed its doors after nearly 100 years in business.
Phillips Hardware, a regular stop on Circuit avenue for almost 100 years, will be closing its doors in September.
The building housing the Island’s last main street hardware store, 30 Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs, has changed hands after more than 90 years under the ownership of the Phillips family. The buyers are Robert and Donna Pacheco.
The future is uncertain for the last main street hardware store on Martha’s Vineyard. The building that houses Phillips Hardware on Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs was listed for sale by the owners on March 15, with an asking price of $2.9 million.
With approval from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, the owners of Phillips Hardware in Oak Bluffs plan to forge ahead with a new three-story building on Circuit avenue. A new firefighting building at the airport also got a green light last week.
