Islanders have a rare chance this weekend to see the creative process revealed in words and movement, when Carolyn Dorfman presents what is being called an intimate evening of dance, dialogue and discovery. The choreographer is an Island favorite — last year her dance company performed Mayne Mentshn at the Performing Arts Center; in the spring, she and her dancers taught in Vineyard elementary schools; in 2006, her company performed The Klezmer Sketch here in a program that also included Urban Bush Women and a piece with Island children performing.

It’s a double feature of classic choreography and the chaos of Wall Street on stage this weekend at The Yard.

First, world-renowned Isadora Duncan specialist Catherine Gallant will perform new choreography plus rarely performed pieces of early modern dance in a program featuring live piano music by Daniel Fox on Friday, August 28, at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, August 29 at 4 p.m. at the arts center on Middle Road in Chilmark.

An Island of Women, an original musical, looks at life on the Vineyard between 1850 and 1852 when much of the male population was off whaling. In response to the many requests for another performance by people who missed the original shows, it is being revived on Sunday, August 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. If you miss this performance, you will have to travel off-Island to Woods Hole or Fall River where the production will be performed the first weekend in October as a fundraiser for The Coalition for Social Justice.

At 11 p.m. on Sundays in summer reggae music rumbles underground, three concrete steps beneath Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs at the Dive Bar. The boom and song of Peter Tosh, Mavado and Sean Paul, earlier sealed surreptitiously in this sunken saloon, swell and rupture to the streets as the party peaks in size and vibrancy.
