Samba Chocolate, a performance of original samba music, will be presented for the first time at Che’s Lounge this Sunday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Inspired by a cold, dark winter, Island musicians Bella and Daniel Waters composed some hot and spicy music for nylon-stringed classical guitar and for cavaquinho, an authentic Brazilian four-stringed soprano guitar of Portuguese ancestry.
Sounds of chattering teenagers filled the performance hall as they slowly gathered around the piano at the center of the stage. Dressed in causal clothing, some of it splashed with names of colleges they hope to attend next fall, these Island teens appeared relaxed in their role as international performers fresh off a seven-engagement tour of Austria.
After performing in the cathedrals, palaces and streets of Vienna, the Minnesingers this week were preparing for this weekend’s Island show, called Can You Dig It?
The West Tisbury Congregational Church choir will perform Frostiana, Seven Country Songs, words by Robert Frost and music by Randall Thompson, in an upcoming afternoon concert also featuring pianist Dr. Lisa Weiss playing Twenty-Four Preludes, Opus 28, by Chopin, and Elite Syncopations and Pine Apple Rag by Scott Joplin.
The concert is set for Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. at the church in West Tisbury, with a reception following. The choir will be directed by Linda Berg. The suggested donation is $15, to benefit the choir’s Italy trip.
Award-winning dancer and choreographer Nora Chipaumire enraptured students across the Island last week in The Yard’s artists-in-the-schools program. Ms. Chipaumire, associate artistic director of the acclaimed company Urban Bush Women, teaches a blend of Southern African and modern dance.
In the middle of a neighborhood of strangers sat an empty lot filled with garbage. The lot looked like no place for a garden. But one day, a young girl with a handful of bean seeds and nowhere to plant them took a chance and cleared a small space among the garbage. She dug into the soil and dropped in her seeds.
It’s a little musicians’ inside joke: Delores Stevens, pianist and artistic director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society, has dubbed this weekend’s performance The Phantom Violin Concert.
A quartet of acclaimed musicians will gather on the stage of the Old Whaling Church at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, April 5, for the society’s annual spring concert. There will be music by Telemann, Beethoven, and Poulenc and Schumann, and for the finale, a performance of Cesar Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major — without the violin.
