The yellow house at the head of Camp street at William street is not for sale, has not been neglected and is not in need of restoration. It is that rare object: a house that has been cared for all of its long, long life.

Most of downtown Vineyard Haven was destroyed by fire in 1883. William street was untouched and now hosts the longest stretch of old buildings in town.

The Island Housing Trust and Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank paid $1.2 million for the property off State Road in Vineyard Haven, with a plan to build rental housing on part of the land and leave the remainder in conservation.

Unable to agree on whether a 125-year-old house at the edge of the Edgartown Historic District qualifies as a historic property, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Thursday voted narrowly to review a building demolition proposal at 2 Beach street as a development of regional impact (DRI).

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank will expand its holdings around Ice House Pond in West Tisbury with the purchase of 22 acres off Lambert’s Cove Road. The seller is FOCUS, a Christian fellowship group with a campus nearby. The land bank paid $2.3 million.
