The Vineyard has long lived with labor shortages. Help wanted is the usual cry of small business owners here. Even this week, with the swirl of news around the acrobatic stock market, and climbing rates of unemployment and foreclosures across the state and the nation, it is worth noting that employment on the Island remains relatively strong.
Luxury Advertising on Wings
Question: Why does the Martha’s Vineyard Airport need luxury advertising?
Answer: It doesn’t.
Better question: Why does the Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission believe it should consider luxury advertising as a way to generate extra revenue?
Answer: It shouldn’t.
Alley’s General Store
In times of yore, one humble store
Sustained our tiny town.
‘Twas not the kind where one might find
A fancy evening gown.
Instead, our needs — from nails to seeds —
Were modest as the dickens,
And Nancy Luce had little use
For lipstick on her chickens.
These wooden walls held overalls
To fit most any size;
This year’s sophomore class has been giving very serious consideration to the world they have inherited and have much to say that they would like the candidates for the presidential election to hear. Writing to the politician of their choice, they have asked the questions and made the observations that are important to them. In these frightening times, our young people are speaking up and want to be heard. Each of their letters has been sent to the candidate concerned, and so far they have received brief responses.
