Cancer Support Fund

A fund has been established at the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank for Heather Jardin, who is undergoing treatment for leukemia at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Heather is the manager of the herb garden at Morning Glory Farm in Edgartown, where she has worked for the past 10 years. Her address is Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Floor, 44 Binney street, Boston, MA 02115. Benefit Auction

A silent and live auction to benefit the Edgartown School eighth grade trip this spring to Washington, D.C., is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Oyster Bar & Grill, 57 Circuit avenue, Oak Bluffs.

Items slated for the auction include a Peter Simon family portrait, a Ray Ellis signed print, and 100 gallons of fuel. Edward Jerome will be the auctioneer.

Admission is $30. Tickets will be available at the door.

Possible Dreams Auction

Will Move to Outerland

After 29 years in the garden of Edgartown’s Harborside Inn, the Possible Dreams Auction this August will move a few miles up Island to the grounds of Outerland, the former Hot Tin Roof nightclub, to celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer in a rain-or-shine venue. The auction will be held under a tent at Outerland on August 4.

The day outside was cold. A real winter northeaster was blowing in and the gray clouds above promised snow. The door to Vera Shorter’s Vineyard Haven home, however, was open.

She had just indulged in what is quite possibly her only vice she said as she spread a stack of ginger snaps on a plate. She braved the cold so her home would not smell like the cigarettes she cannot seem to give up. She would hate for the smoke to offend the guests who stop in from time to time.

The Martha’s Vineyard NAACP will hold its annual membership and awards brunch celebrating the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, 130 Centre street, Vineyard Haven.

The event will include a special tribute to Vera Shorter. Sadie Burton-Goss is the scheduled guest speaker.

Martin Luther King Walk

A walk to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will start Monday, Jan. 21 at 9:30 a.m. Participants will meet in front of the Court House in Edgartown. The walk will start on Main street and end at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on North Summer street. There will be a brief talk, followed by a video of Dr. King. Refreshments will be served.
