Faced with a budget deficit of as much as $2 million — the largest in town history — Oak Bluffs selectmen on Tuesday debated a wide range of painful cost-cutting measures, including eliminating salaries for elected officials, combining debt with other towns, restructuring town departments and eliminating positions.

A retaining wall estimated to weigh about 30 tons holding up a steeply sloping bank along Sea View avenue in Oak Bluffs collapsed suddenly Wednesday morning, sending town officials scrambling to repair the wall in time for the summer season and raising fresh questions about the structural integrity of certain parts of the town waterfront.

Saturday was a vintage homecoming night at the American Legion Hall in Vineyard Haven. More than 60 mostly graying friends, all of them young at heart, gathered for a home-cooked pork dinner.

Rows of tables were set with white paper tablecloth. Artificial flowers in little vases were evenly spaced on every table. The conversation throughout the hall was spirited. Men showed up with pressed slacks and ironed shirts. Many of their ladies came wearing dresses and a few wore lipstick.

Island Grown Initiative is pleased to announce the winners of the first annual Island Grown special award at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Science Fair. The award goes to students whose projects focus on agricultural systems and techniques that support biodiversity and human health or address local agricultural systems on the Vineyard.

The Tashmoo Spring Building Preservation Committee invites community members and interested groups to a public outreach meeting to brainstorm together about the possible future use of the Tashmoo Spring Building, built in 1887 as a pumping station at the head of Lake Tashmoo, Vineyard Haven.

Exterior renovations and interior structural restoration are scheduled to be completed by June, 2009. During the next phase, it is planned that the building will be designed in a manner that protects its environmentally fragile location.

At Saint Michael’s College

Two Vineyard students have been named to the dean’s list at Saint Michael’s College in Burlington, Vt., for the fall 2007 semester.

They are Christina M. Colley, daughter of Carlos and Joanne Colley of Oak Bluffs, a psychology and elementary education major, and Matthew M. Seklecki, son of Daniel Seklecki and Catherine MacDonald of Vineyard Haven, a political science major.
