Cong. William Delahunt had literally thousands of reasons to vote against the proposed $700 billion financial rescue package when it came before the House at the start of this week, not least of them something he saw in Forbes magazine on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Forbes quoted a spokeswoman’s explanation of how the U.S. Treasury came up with the $700 billion figure. “It’s not based on any particular data point,” she said. “We just wanted to choose a really large number.”

The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission held an open session on Monday seeking public comment on its properties and management plans. The meeting was held at the Vineyard Transit Authority second floor office at the airport business park.
One person attended: Bill Straw of Vineyard Haven, who suggested the land bank move up on its priority list the acquisition of properties that help in the movement of people along the side of roads, for example bicycle paths.
Residents along the south shore of the Island will likely hear loud explosions next Friday due to an operation conducted by the U.S. Navy to clear and remove unexploded ordnance on Noman’s Land left over from training exercises during World War II.
The operation to collect and detonate munitions was initially scheduled for today, although a Navy spokesman said yesterday it was postponed until next Friday, Oct. 10, due to the threat of inclement weather.
Oak Bluffs police on Saturday arrested a Maine man for allegedly selling cocaine at downtown bars over the past few weeks. Oak Bluffs officers assigned to the Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force learned that Darren Bennett, 26, was selling cocaine at various downtown bars and prepared a search warrant based on their investigation.
A longtime employee of the Capawock movie theatre, known to many as George the ticket man, was robbed by two unknown assailants Tuesday evening while dropping off receipts for the evening in a nearby overnight bank deposit box.
Tisbury police chief John Cashin said George Buckley, 79, of Lagoon Pond Road, was robbed around 8:35 p.m. by two young males as he approached the night deposit box at the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank branch at 65 Main street — about two blocks from the theatre.
Mr. Buckley was not injured in the attack.
