A Call to Young Artists

The theme of this year’s Island Book Cover Art Contest, open to all Vineyard sixth grade students, is Island lighthouses. This will be the 19th annual cover competition sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.

Here are the requirements: entries must be drawn with a horizontal layout, on 9-inch by 12-inch wide white paper, using only markers or crayons. Chalk, pencil or pen entries are not eligible.

Persian Rug Sale

Celebrating the Art of Iran, an exhibition and benefit sale of authentic Persian tribal rugs, is now open in Vineyard Haven.

Sales will benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, Community Services, Affordable Housing and other Island charities,. Visitors have a daily chance to win 50 per cent off any rug.

The exhibition is housed at 18 State Road in Vineyard Haven, the former site of the Belushi-Pisano Gallery. Opening hours are Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Capt. Geoff Freeman and the boys of the ladder truck set the bar high for our first dinner of the new year. Geoff managed to get his hands on a tender pork loin from his father in law at Reliable Market, plus there was Chris Hargy’s homemade chowder and Buck Martin’s dessert selections! Many resolutions were broken in an attempt to sample some of each.

Dr. King would be proud: a young African American from Oak Bluffs is working alongside young people of color from around the world, who all started their new year with a vision and a plan for how they would build a better world.

Nineteen-year-old Jesse Boswell is a second year African American Studies major at Bates College; she plans to be a lawyer. On New Year’s Day she traveled to Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands to attend a youth summit for sustainable development.
