If you are a young fisherman, or the parent of same, the best advice for tonight is go to bed early. The 35th annual Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trout tournament begins at first light at Duarte’s Pond in West Tisbury.
As many as 200 children are expected at the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank property off Lambert’s Cove Road. The pond was stocked yesterday with hatchery trout.

A dead 40-foot whale washed up at South Beach in Edgartown on Friday. The sei whale may have been killed by a boat propeller.
David Grunden, the Oak Bluffs shellfish constable and member of the Island’s marine mammal stranding network, and his team investigated. Mr. Grunden believes the sei whale probably had been dead for a week or more.
A group of Vermont nightclub owners aim to open for business on the property formerly housing the Outerland nightclub this summer.
Partners in Ya Dude LLC, who operate Nectar’s nightclub in Burlington, Vt., want to sublet the property from Bar LLC. the company owned by Barry and Mona Rosenthal, who operated Outerland for three years until last fall.
First they need the approval of the Martha’s Vineyard airport commission, which owns the property, and also the Edgartown selectmen, who issue the liquor license for the club.
Charity Golf
The team of David Murphy, John Dutton, John Farrington, Jane Shigley and Paul Breen emerged from a crowded field of 24 teams this past weekend to win the Holy Ghost Scholarship Golf Tournament at Mink Meadows in Vineyard Haven. Runners-up were the team of Steve Furtaw, Keith Fullin, Jason Balboni, J.T. Marhar and Eric Perry.
Big Night Out
Big Night Out, the annual Vineyard Montessori School fund-raiser, is May 15 at Farm Neck golf course from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be live and silent auctions, with hors d’oeuvre and dessert from Rickard’s Bakery. Tickets will be available at the door as well as online at ticketsmv.com.
