Hello, Tauras

Ellen and Tauras Biskis of Chilmark announce the birth of a son, Tauras Kasiulis, born on Dec. 22, 2009, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Tauras weighed 10 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. He is welcomed by brother Kestutis and sister Graina.

Welcome, Dashiell

Carolina and Dan Cooney of El Cerrito, Calif., announce the birth of their son, Dashiell Addison Cooney, on Dec. 8, 2009. His mother was born on Martha’s Vineyard and plans to move back here with her family in June, 2010, to live in the North Tisbury house of her great-grandmother, Jean Wexler.

William Tashtego Arrives

Carol and Alexander Wilson Nagi of West Tisbury welcomed William Tashtego Nagi into the world on Dec. 11 at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. William weighed a healthy 8 pounds, 8 ounces at birth. He is the grandson of Pat Nagi of Plymouth, the late William R. Nagi of Fitchburg and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jack of Ontario, Canada.

It was the worst weather year in memory. Summer didn’t arrive until August and there was rainfall, record-breaking rainfall. The Vineyard received, as of Wednesday morning, 53.68 inches of rain in 2009, which is almost eight inches more than its annual average.

Robert C. Hayden, president of the Martha’s Vineyard branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), was honored during the National Alliance for Black School Educators’ annual conference recently held in Indianapolis, Ind. Executives from Exploritas (formerly Elderhostel) presented Mr. Hayden with the Asa Grant Hilliard III Exploritas Award for Lifelong Learning.

American Tower Company, the concern that wants to build a distributed antenna system (DAS) to improve cell phone coverage in the three up-Island towns, has submitted a letter to West Tisbury suggesting that its application does not need review by the town zoning board of appeals.

Dated Dec. 14 and written by American Tower attorney Alexander P. Gamota, the letter claims that approval is required by the town selectmen but not the zoning board of appeals.
