Tennis Tournament

The Vineyard Tennis Center will hold a tournament on Valentine’s Day weekend to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard.

It will be a mixed doubles, round robin tournament, with competition on Feb. 13 and 14 at Vineyard Tennis Center Workout and Spa near the airport. Teams will be ranked by ability, with two or three tiers, depending on the number of teams that sign up. The best teams will duel in finals on Sunday.

The Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank Charitable Foundation has supported the American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter with a $1,000 grant to support its Martha’s Vineyard Preparedness Initiative, aimed at benefiting every resident on the Island.

The ultimate success of the initiative will be measured by having Red Cross volunteers trained, equipped and ready to operate disaster response shelters and the community to be prepared to respond to local emergencies if the need arises.

The boys’ basketball team continued to roll this week, improving its record to 10-1 — the team’s best start ever under head coach Mike Joyce.

The team now stands atop the Eastern Athletic Conference with a record of 3-0, and already has clinched a berth in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament, with roughly half a season yet to play.

The girls’ hockey team continues to improve and the boys’ hockey team staged a turnaround to the delight of team coach Matt Mincone.
