The lone contest on the ballot in the annual town election in Edgartown this year is for a seat on the planning board. Dudley Levick 3rd and Michael McCourt are both running for a one-year term. The seat was left vacant by Alison Cannon who resigned last year. Mr. McCourt was appointed as an in December.

The election will be held on Thursday, April 15 in the selectmen’s room in the town hall. Polling hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Incumbent selectman Michael Donaroma is running unopposed for a third full term.

As part of National Healthcare Decisions Day, the hospital is hosting a public program on April 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the doctors’ wing, with free information about advance care planning and advance directive forms.

The program will help you prepare to discuss your wishes with family, friends and health care providers, and to execute written advance directives in accordance with Massachusetts state laws.

The American Red Cross will offer a Chokesaver for Restaurant Emergencies training class on April 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Cottager’s Corner in Oak Bluffs. Registration is available online atcciredcross.org or by calling toll-free to 508-775-1540.

Our Island Club this week announced the distribution of their 2009 donations and scholarships. More than 160 Island organizations will share in over $36,000 in donations.

This year, scholarships will be established for the Permanent Endowment Fund for higher education, two high school vocational programs (auto mechanics and building trade), the Vineyard Nursing Association, Featherstone Center for the Arts and Martha’s Vineyard Community Services’ early childhood development program.

Tartan Day Exhibit

April 6 was National Tartan Day, and to help mark the occasion an exhibition of distinguished Scots and Scottish Americans opened at the Vineyard Haven Library this week. Designed by Max Bosman of Vineyard Haven, the exhibit features 20 people of Scottish heritage, including several who had ties to the Vineyard. The exhibit will remain up through the month of April.
