It was an especially busy winter at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport, as workers rushed to complete the two preparatory phases of a $7 million runway renovation project. The project involves removing approximately 300 feet of runway along the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road, and adding new runway on the other side of the airport, closer to Barnes Road.

Three athletes left the Island Friday morning in their purple and white warm-up suits, high socks and caps, each in their numbered T-shirts, carrying their black sports bags, having trained since September for this day of competition.

Edgartown police last week arrested an 18-year-old man at the Kelley House after he reportedly assaulted two officers.

Nicholas Franklin of Edgartown was charged with assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. Det. Jonathon Searle and officer David Rossi both received scrapes and scratches from Mr. Franklin after they responded to the call.

A story in Friday’s Gazette about Family Planning services reported inaccurately on the length of clinic staff work furloughs; the furloughs are for 14 hours, not 14 days.

In this digital age, it sometimes seems as if the whole world is made up of amateur videographers. With the introduction of online video forums like YouTube, just about anyone can post just about anything on the Internet. And YouTube is just one of the many sites dedicated to such things.

The problem with YouTube is that it’s not very selective. For every memorable video, there are thousands and thousands of essentially useless clips. Imagine the time it takes to find the diamonds in the rough.

We’re getting close to D-Day now. A couple of days away. You can tell. These big C47s, these transport planes, were out on the airstrip. And all of a sudden one day on the sides of the planes appeared big white crosses. I guess that was to help our own fighters identify them. It was clear that something was going on.
