New Year’s resolutions, so common and yet so very, very fleeting.
I will cure my Facebook addiction, learn Swahili, write a children’s book, climb Kilimanjaro, become an expert fencer, save the blue-footed boobies singlehandedly, chew thoughtfully, walk slower, breathe deeper and, and . . . Ah heck, pass the booze and smokes. I’m done with all that.

Holiday Raffle Winners
Three lucky shoppers won a combined $850 in prizes from the Tisbury Business Association holiday raffle. Ken Lewis of Brookline won $500, Rose Gudrun of Vineyard Haven won $250, and Joan and Peter Kumpitch of Edgartown won $100.
Hello Leah
Laiza Alves and James Cimeno of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Leah Colby Cimeno, born on Dec. 26, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Leah weighed 8 pounds at birth.

Kelly O’Connell and Leland N. Sylva 3rd of Vineyard Haven announce the birth of a son, Leland N. Sylva 4th, born on Dec. 29, 2010, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Leland weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces at birth.
Lt. Alexander B. Baynes, son of Leslie and Judy Baynes of Edgartown, recently graduated first in his class from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. He was awarded the Navy League Award for the Highest Academic Achievement.
Lieutenant Baynes, an engineering duty officer, chose for his thesis research on the efficacy of meta-materials and transformational optics to defend against high-energy electromagnetic beams.
