Tisbury police arrested two Bridgewater men this week for attempting to steal a 1,000-pound lead sailboat keel.

Corey M. Dechaine, 19 and James Carroll McFarland, 21, were apprehended in broad daylight on Monday on property off Oak Hill Road used by Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway for the storage of boat parts.

The West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. announced this week that it had surpassed an important milestone in its capital campaign: the state requirement of raising $902,000 in private matching funds by Jan. 31. “We’re pleased that our campaign so far has received more than $1.3 million in private donations,” said Hunter Moorman, chair of the foundation. He added, however, the campaign must still meet the town’s fund-raising goal as well.

Town leaders in Tisbury and Oak Bluffs had their first look at the drawings for a permanent Lagoon Pond drawbridge last week.

The drawings were on display during a meeting at the Martha’s Vineyard Commission office in Oak Bluffs. The federally-funded $28.5 million project is expected to take three years to build; construction bids are slated to be advertised in the fall.

Help is on the way to improve water circulation in Farm Pond in Oak Bluffs.

The town learned this week that it had received an $80,000 grant to complete the engineering and permitting for a wider culvert, intended to help restore the health of the pond by allowing a greater exchange with the sea.
