A surprise proposal occurred at the Gay Head Lighthouse recently when Anthony DiMartino proposed to Megan Szewczuk. Anthony chose that special spot from having spent many summer vacations on the Island. Anthony is the nephew of Sally Rizzo of Vineyard Haven. The couple will marry in September of 2014 and hope to spend many seasons on the Vineyard.

Hello, Charley Jennifer and Carlton Woods of West Tisbury announce the birth of a daughter, Charley Mae Woods, born on Dec. 23 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Charley weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces at birth.

Whit Manter and Tim Spahr drove beneath a full moon in the very early hours of Saturday morning, heading for the State Forest. It was 3 a.m. when they arrived at their destination. As soon as they stepped out of the car, they heard an unmistakable sound. Hoo. Hoo hoo hoo.

After the years following the recession that began in 2008, when the Vineyard as well as the nation remained mired in day-to-day survival, 2012 felt like a shift in a new direction. There was a slight uptick in economic optimism and a move toward planning for the future. Questions of character and big house debates revealed that the main topic was no longer unemployment and how to make ends meet, although these issues still remain, but how Vineyarders define themselves and their community.
