Kimberly and Derek Whitehead of Milford, N.H. announce the birth of a daughter, Marly Evelyn Whitehead, born on June 15 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Marly weighed 9 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. She joins big sisters Kyra and Isabelle.

A Vineyard organization devoted to spaying and neutering feral cats will be closing its feral cat shelter at the end of the year.

Laurie Huff, the founder of Cattrap Inc., said the organization will lose its lease on a barn sheltering rescued feral cats in December. Cattrap is scrambling to find homes for some of the 15 to 20 cats, now semi-feral, who call the barn home, including Holiday, a friendly calico who was found with a distended colon; Frasier, a big black cat who lived under a porch, and Misty from Katama.

Dr. Donald M. Berwick, a Chilmark summer resident and former Obama administration official, announced Monday that he will run for governor in 2014. The pediatrician, former Harvard professor and one-time temporary administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, spoke on the Vineyard last summer at a forum on health care.

As summer heats up and tick season reaches its peak months on the Island, the Martha’s Vineyard Tick-Borne Initiative has launched its latest public health effort, reaching out to Vineyard schools via video. Last week more than 1,500 DVDs, each containing a short tick safety and awareness video, were delivered to Island schools, with each elementary-age child receiving a copy to take home.
