South-facing beaches along Martha’s Vineyard are under high risk for rip currents today, the National Weather Service has announced. The warning will remain in effect through Monday evening.

In response to the warning, The Trustees of Reservations has closed the beach at Long Point Wildlife Refuge. Swimmers are encouraged to use the pond for swimming.

Oak Bluffs police Lt. Timothy Williamson said a Chevy sedan crossed the center line and hit a taxi van head-on in front of the restaurant Hooked. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. The taxi was not carrying passengers.

Lt. Williamson said police are investigating whether the driver of the sedan “may have been impaired.”

The parents and students of the Vineyard contingent of eighth graders attending Falmouth Academy held a graduation party for themselves at the Chilmark Community Center on Friday night, June 7. As perhaps the largest class ever of students commuting to the mainland for two school years, they gained a reputation among fellow commuters for their pleasant demeanor, high spirits and generally good behavior.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum celebrated its 90th birthday on Saturday by holding its annual Evening of Discovery gala on the grounds of its future site, the former Marine Hospital in Vineyard Haven. Three-hundred forty-two guests paid $200 to attend the event — the largest number of attendees since the museum’s summer dinners began 15 years ago.

Food trucks likely will never be permitted in downtown Oak Bluffs, according to draft regulations presented at a public reading at Wednesday night’s selectmen’s meeting. At the well-attended meeting, the public and the selectmen spoke out passionately on both sides of the issue — in support of the allowance of food trucks in the downtown area, or in opposition.

Kelly R. Kershaw, 30, was arraigned on charges of interfering with a firefighter, assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct and threat to commit a crime. Charges were filed against Ms. Kershaw after she allegedly interfered with firefighters who were called to fight a May dryer fire at her home.

The Tisbury selectmen voted June 10 to fire Ms. Kershaw.
