Earth Day, that boisterous, mass and grass roots celebration of the planet and how we can stop smutching it, began 40 years ago with millions of college students protesting, some wearing gas masks to show their concern about pollution. Now, some young singles are hoping to meet their eco-other in Earth Day Speed Dating (“Are you looking for a randy recycler? Do you consider yourself a charismatic composter?”), in just one of thousands of events registered with the Earth Day Network.

Every task seems to come with its own set of problems. I ordered a sling bag of Vermont composted manure from SBS. It is a huge plastic burlap bag filled with two yards of weed-free compost. I use a small amount in my garden rows and in the bottom of seed trays. It is an enormous amount for a small garden but very in high quality.

On Sunday and Monday mornings, for those who rise early there is an impressive appearance of both the crescent moon and the planet Jupiter. The two are close together. Both are in the zodiacal constellation Pisces. You’ll see the two high in the southeastern sky just before dawn.

What is going on? This week I’ve received reports of spring migrants arriving on the Island well ahead of schedule. It is amazing after a relatively harsh winter. I hate to mention global warming, but it seems the movement of birds, flowering of plants, hatching of insects and frog choruses are starting earlier.
