The skies in the weeks ahead are especially interesting for planet watchers, no telescope required. Three planets are easily visible: Venus, Jupiter and Mars.

Colorful harvest festivals are one marker for the arrival of autumn, but for me the surest sign that fall is here is the number of days I spend mucking about in Island ponds.

What a weekend! A sandhill crane, western kingbird and Say’s phoebe are the three western species that were present this past weekend. It must be the fall migration for all these western strays to be here at the same time.

A Walk in the Dark

Felix Neck is going dark, with nighttime walking that is.

Find out what goes bump in the night on Saturday, Oct. 22, as the wildlife sanctuary celebrates the coming of darkness with a guided evening walk. The journey finishes at a campfire with hot chocolate, s’mores and storytelling.

The evening is from 6 to 8 p.m. and registration is required.

The cost for members is $10 per group (up to 5 people), and $15 for nomembers.

All ages are welcome.

For those still trying to figure out what to do with all those leftover coffee grounds and egg shells, there is help. This weekend Felix Neck and the Polly Hill Arboretum are hosting a compost tea workshop with Ann McGovern, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s consumer waste reduction coordinator.

Wow, that’s a mouthful. Perhaps a bit of composting is in order for Ms. McGovern’s title. Like maybe, Lady Who Turns Garbage into Garden Gold. Yes, that’s more like it.
