Summertime Bounty

I'm a big fan of bad weather. Monday morning's unexpected rain gave me a much-deserved day off.

Last Saturday’s Living Local event was a good time had by all. A great documentary, Open Sesame, was presented before a sizable audience. It was about the importance of saving heirloom and open-pollinated seed.

I picked the wrong profession. I should have been a meteorologist. They are rarely right and they still get to keep the job. What really annoys me is their disdain for rain.

I know I’ve mentioned this before. I’ve mentioned everything before — I’ve done this entirely too long. At any rate, slice radishes very thinly and mix them with a creamy dressing, they make a wonderful sandwich.

Are we ever going to get rain? Whiting’s Pond has disappeared and the large pond at the Keith Farm looks to be a quarter of its original size.

My new favorite is the Fortex bean, a French horticultural type, only climbing over six feet tall and producing thin, round fillet-type beans over 10 inches long. I’m picking them in a timely fashion, so they are still tender and delicious.
